20110929 Les Savy Fav at The Mohawk 5 Year Anniversary
Tim Harrington is, well, a man of many entertaining talents. I was reminded of that when I caught them at The ‘Hawk. I’ve shot them before a few times. Here are two more photo sets on BrooklynVegan:

Les Savy Fav played night one of the 4-day Mohawk 5th year anniversary celebration, and nowhere was off-limits. Breast feeding a log, climbing on stage roof awning – walls – outside, crowd mingling, beer spraying, and very much more.
I could go on, but the pictures in the gallery above give ample witness to the nature of the events.
20110923 Erasure played ACL Live (with Frankmusic), Ava Arenella next door…
Vince Clarke and Andy Bell are Erasure. They played Austin City Limits at The Moody Theater on September 23rd (with Frankmusik) – and even though I hadn’t seen them live since 1992 in NYC – nothing had been lost.
Only downside to the night was my Nikkor 24-70 AF-S zoom locking up and becoming a very expensive 24mm 2.8 – so off it has gone for repair. $565 estimated for the repair, if you’re curious as to how much that hurts. I should have it back soon. 
In between sets, I was able to catch a few shots of Ava Arenella singing on the terrace at The W Hotel (as part of The Ballet Austin Fête 2011).
20110925 Queensrÿche played Emo’s East – with Windowpane
Sunday the 25th Queensrÿche played in Austin at Emo’s East (with Seattle’s Windowpane). 2011 marks 30 years as a band. In addition to a powerful voice, Geoff Tate brought his charm – and FANGS!
30 years is no mean feat – and to still come off as sincere and graceful with your performance, as well as offering a cross section from so many albums is to be applauded. They played some new music (Around the World, for one) as well.
Today’s performers should look to their elders, regardless of genre, to see how well things can be done. This was a great example. Well played Geoff and Queensrÿche.
2008 Restavrant in NYC at CMJ, 20110907 at Antone’s
Restavrant – who are playing Antone’s 9/07/2011 – tore up Santos Party House in NYC back in 2008 during CMJ. Worth checking out. Pics above are from the 2008 CMJ show (back when my cameras were a lot less capable, I tilted a lot, and we were all younger). Tickets are a recession-proof $5-$7. Get them here.
20110826 Handsome Furs play Waterloo Records and Mohawk
August 26th saw the Handsome Furs come to Austin and add their flavor to the 110-degree Austin heat, in support of their current release, Sound Kapital. They played an in-store set at Waterloo Records, followed by a full show at the Mohawk. Got to chat with Dan about their recent touring, as well as how much they are looking forward to hitting Beirut. They really love their jobs. And yeah – they are very much in love, which plays out in everything they do. Their tour manager Maria was also all-aces – so accommodating and wonderfully charming.

20110824 Dawes and Robert Ellis play La Zona Rosa
NPR darlings Dawes and Robert Ellis played La Zona Rosa in Austin on August 24th. It’s really nice to see both coming into their own. Dawes’ latest ‘Nothing is Wrong’ featured heavily in their set, and Robert Ellis was far more animated than I’d seen him at his last two outings in Austin.
Really great offerings by both, and I have no doubt they are all-in for the long haul. While folk and country might not be your bag (and they’re certainly not things normally in my basket), these two break some of the traditional molds and add unique and moving additions which makes them hard to pin down to just those categories.
